THE PERFECT ITINERARY
We like to leave Sydney at around 8am to avoid traffic and to get in a full day. If you need to take a break and stretch your legs along the way and grab a coffee, we suggest stopping off half way at the Hydro Majestic in the Blue Mountains, one of Australia’s most iconic historical hotels, to soak in the stunning views of the Megalong Valley or even indulge in their amazing High Tea.
We then arrive in Mudgee at lunch time. I like to stop off at one of the wineries on the way into Mudgee for a bite to eat. Both Logan’s and Moothi Estate offer fantastic views with wine tastings and lunch platters 7 days a week. Other great wineries on the way into Mudgee are Skimstone, First Ridge and Burrundulla.
Another great restaurant to visit on the way in is Our Chow which is located at Burrundulla Wines. We do a quick grocery shop (S & S Meats is great for the BBQ and if you stop into Mudgee Tourist Information Centre they sell lots of local produce). You must go to High Valley Mudgee Cheese for some tastings and to grab some cheese which is located next to the Cellar by Gilbert which offers amazing food and sharing boards. The last chance to grab some Mudgee wine before you reach Glenayr Farm is Burnbrae where you can pre-order a take away local grazing board to take back to Glenayr Farm with you so you don’t need to worry about cooking dinner.
We arrive at the farm by about 4pm, in time to unpack, get settled, light the fire (during allowed times) and watch the sunset with a Mudgee wine and cheese platter and a simple BBQ or something we’ve grabbed in Mudgee.
We wake the following morning and do a farm hike, then come back for BBQ bacon and eggs and enjoy a relaxing morning reading. We then select a few wineries and a great restaurant for an indulgent day out but start at Mudgee Honey Haven for our morning coffee fix and to taste some honey and local produce. There is a ‘Mudgee Region’ Magazine on the coffee table to work out what wineries have lunch on what days.
A few of my favourites are Pipeclay Pumphouse (fine dining with degustation options), The Barn (offers a relaxed dining experience with a focus on simple, seasonal, delicious food), Di Lusso (Italian on the vineyard overlooking the dam), Lowes (for platters), Zin House (one chef hat restaurant opened Friday to Monday), Burnbrae for weekend wood fired pizzas and platters and mid week share platters, Huntingtons (with food at ‘The Garden Bar & Kitchen by Indigiearth). Peter Van Gent Winery is great to pop into on the way home to have some Port and chocolates or Baker Willimas Distillery for gin, whisky, schnapps and liqueurs. Other favourite stops are the Olive Nest and Aril Estate for olives, oils and pomegranates. Again, we head back in time for sunset drinks. If we feel like dinner, we will either drive 5 minutes down the road to the Gold and Fleece Hotel which is a quintessential country pub or eat in at the farm.
If were heading home on a Sunday, on our way, we pop into Burnbrae for their Sunday Pizzas followed by a little bit of retail therapy in Mudgee.
If we’re lucky enough to spend 3 nights, we spend the 3rd day being more energetic, playing golf, at the Mudgee Golf Club (which is one of the Country NSW leading golf clubs), hiking or more wine tasting and eating. Or we will explore the historic near by towns of Rylstone, Kandos, Gulgong, Hill End or Sofala.
If it’s a special occasion, Mudgee Helicopters or Capertee Valley Helicopters can pick you up at ‘Glenayr Farm’ and take you for a scenic flight over Capertree Valley (the world’s second largest canyon) then drop you off to Pipeclay Pumphouse or The Zin House for lunch.
For information on what to see and do in Mudgee Region, like festivals, concerts, cooking classes, events and markets please visit ‘What’s on’.
Another great experience is to drive home via the beautiful historic towns of Rylstone and Kandos and stop off for some wine tasting at de Beaurepaire winery.
